Kawite's Story
Kawite Koyrita rises with the sun to gather water for her animals and crops from the community pond. She smiles as she thinks over the day ahead of her.
Today, she’ll make breakfast for her family, send her youngest children to school, and tend to her goats and sheep. After she completes her chores, she’ll meet with her community savings group to dream of ideas to empower other women in her village to thrive like she is.
Kawite’s smile hasn’t always shone so brightly. For the last ten years her family struggled to make ends meet as the effects of the climate crisis ravaged her village with prolonged drought and hardship.
Christian Aid and our local partner worked alongside Kawite’s community, providing them with goats and a clean water source, meaning they could raise and sell the animals to earn an income.
The gift of a goat has changed Kawite’s life for the better. With ten children and another on the way, she doesn’t have to worry any more about getting food on the table or affording to keep them in school. She can sell the goats’ milk, cheese, manure and even the goats themselves if they ever fall on hard times again, giving her financial security and peace of mind for the future.
